Fence staining
Raw pine with the drop sheets still down, and the same fence stained near black. The two frames were taken from different distances in different light, so the thing to compare is the finish rather than the framing.

Stained fence
New palings, raw pine, straight off the build. Timber that new drinks unevenly, so our first coat is as much about getting an even take across boards of different density as it is about colour.
The finished fence is a dark stain rather than a paint, which keeps the grain visible instead of burying it. Paint gives you a flat colour and a film that will eventually peel, stain gives you the timber and a finish that wears back rather than lifting.
